39th edition 2024 short & midlength films
Far from home, Gül lives and works with a patchwork family in a Turkish village. While Filiz, the youngest of the family, is killing time, Gül has to leave the village earlier than expected.
Lidija-Rukiye Kumpas is currently studying film production at the Vienna Film Academy. GÜL is her debut film.
A word from the selection committee:
Lidija Rukiye Kumpas’s first short film, Gül, seems to follow the slow pace of a Turkish seaside town. But it is through a patchwork family’s routine (where German, Turkish, Russian, and Ukrainian are spoken) that the figure of Gül is revealed: always quick to make way for others, she’s a factotum - here a cleaning lady, there a waitress, or an interpreter. Although she is part of the family, she knows she is “just” the help, working in every frame of this gentle film; a gentleness that is offset by the accuracy of the frames that highlight the laundry or the dishes to be put away. As the opportunity to join a less traditional but more liberal job market presents itself, Gül grapples with the conflicting forces that govern her indefinite role, and suggests the possibility of a deeper alliance with a family member, even if this alliance must remain unspoken.
