No Sleep Till
Alexandra Simpson
In a coastal Florida town threatened by an impending hurricane, locals prepare for a mandatory evacuation. As the last tourists depart and residents board-up their homes, a few wanderers choose to remain.
Alexandra Simpson is a French-American filmmaker and editor. Member of the American collective Omnes Films, she also co-founded the young artists collective ROC Films. No Sleep Till premiered at the Venice Biennale and was awarded the Special Mention of the Jury.
A word from the selection committee:
Alexandra Simpson chose the calm before the storm as a backdrop for the story of her first feature film. A Florida where lonely souls meet, far from the clichés of endless sandy beaches and mass tourism, the characters seem to form a choir who have lost their love of singing. In fact, this ensemble nature of the film which seems to be at its very core is quickly stymied, as the film prefers fits, starts, and side steps to narrative efficiency, which prevails all too often in contemporary American indie films.
Stasis permeates No Sleep Till as it steers us into a world on hold, in which the camera frames collect the dreams and stories of those who have not yet fled.
