John From
João Nicolau
The summer of 15 year old Rita has begun and promises to be neither good nor bad. She dedicates herself to sunbathing on her balcony—a place that she also makes sure to drench with water. And she knows that she can count on Sara, the friend with whom she shares her daytime and night-time meanderings. But, at the Community center, a photography exhibition about the Papuan people turns everything upside down and paves the way for new possibilities. Rita becomes convinced that her destiny is linked by Fatum with that of the exhibition’s curator, who is none other than her new neighbour, a mature man. As a variation on the theme of the young woman, John From creates tensions between the banalities of everyday life and the will to exalt them, while the film asks: how will Rita invoke the powers of imagination and fantasy to submit reality to her desires?
