Beshar
Nadège Abadie
Beshar, a Kurd from Iraq who has been a refugee in Geneva for ten years, is waiting in vain for his family to arrive. Shut away in a flat, he is forbidden to work or leave Switzerland. In an immobile present, he waits.
Filmmaker and photographer Nadège Abadie directed the documentaries 32 Boulevard Magenta (2012) and Le Point de la Rosée (2017). In 2022, she published Tout ce que je leur dois (Flammarion), written from encounters with 100 women born in the early 20th century.
A word from the selection committee:
The film presents itself to us as Beshar presents himself to the camera: with disarming honesty and simplicity.
In no way does this undermine Nadège Abadie’s poetic and political endeavour: patiently, and ever so gently, we reach the character’s intimacy as he gradually bears the burden of a seemingly mundane routine, which we would never suspect at first glance.
And that is surely the core of the film: allowing us to eventually see Beshar, and ultimately, being able to sustain his gaze.
