39th edition 2024 feature films
Karen and Markus live with their children in Karen's idyllic childhood home. Karen's sister Jule and her family arrive to celebrate Markus's birthday. As the house starts filling with life, Karen tenses up and everything comes to a head.
Ramon Zürcher studied film directing at the German Film and Television Academy Berlin (DFFB). His first film, The Strange Little Cat, premiered in the Forum of the Berlinale, then was part of Acid Cannes and Entrevues in 2013. The Girl and the Spider (2021) won Best Director in the Encounters section at Berlinale. Der Spatz im Kamin is the final part of a trilogy about human coexistence.
A word from the selection committee:
With their third feature film, the Zürcher brothers (Ramon writing and directing, and Silvan producing) conclude the family trilogy they began in 2013 with The Strange Little Cat and The Girl and the Spider in 2021.
After the feline and the arachnid, a sparrow gets top billing in a film that emphasises more strongly than ever before the connection between the animal realm and that of humans: cats, dogs, chickens, fireflies, squirrels, and cormorans fill the background and take part in the story.
It is likely due to the location, a vast country house and its surroundings - most notably, a cabin by a pond - which, after the first two films (centred on a family apartment kitchen and a large flatshare, respectively) appears as the extension of the playground for the mis-en-scène, using dollies, editing effects, and subtle VFX, as well as a soundtrack in which piano melodies compete with techno flourishes.
But it is also because, more than a family film, The Sparrow in the Chimney is about a biotope in which the home is the central organism (it is twice said that the entrance door must remain open so that it “can breathe”), influencing each character’s dreams, moods, and psychoses.
