Fatmé, an 11 years old Syrian girl, lives in Lebanon with her family, in a tent by the side of a country road. Her dishevelled hair, dirty clothes, and love for fighting are subjects of discussion among those around her.

Diala Al Hindaoui graduated from Cinéfabrique in Lyon, where she directed her first short film, Deux morceaux de mémoire (2022). Fatmé won the Young Creator’s Award at Fipadoc and the Public Choice Award at Cinéma du Réel in the First Window section.

A word from the selection committee:
In just a few minutes - fourteen to be exact - Diala Al Hindaoui, who trained at Ciné-fabrique, paints the raw, unadorned portrait of a young Syrian girl. Barely ten years old, Fatme is too boyish for those around her. First, her mother is warned. Your daughter looks like a boy. Diala Al Hindaoui’s camera follows Fatme and her sisters for a few days in her pre-teen years through a Lebanese refugee camp. Her energy is infectious, her face captivating, one expression springs to mind “tremendous screen presence”. The director, who fled from Syria herself, focuses on the essence of documentary filmmaking with a fresh outlook: to observe from the perspective of the protagonists - a child in this instance -, listening, collecting the words, and creating bonds. Through this seemingly simple perspective, she crafts a nuanced film about gender and motherhood that lingers long after the end.
