Le Colloque des chiens
Norman Nedellec
Touched by the grace of speech, two dogs philosophise in a hospital car park at night. Together, they paint a bleak picture of a humanity in the grip of a grand calamity, gnawing on our all too human certainties.
Norman Nedellec is a graduate of the École Supérieure d’Art de Clermont Métropole (2017) and Le Fresnoy (2023). Treading the thin line between film and visual art, his art is rooted in his rural family history.
A word from the selection committee:
Nighttime, a neon-lit hospital parking lot. Two dogs on the backseat of a car, who are now able to speak, wonder: “Not only do we talk, but we act as if we were actually capable of reason. Although we are not, man is the only animal gifted with reason.” The Dialogue of the Dogs revisits Miguel de Cervantes’s early 17th century short story with great wit. Through a philosophical debate - in which Berganza the dog confides in Scipio the dog on his condition as a shepherd - Norman Nedellec examines society through a satirical lens. This film is also a tribute to “man’s best friend” whom we believe we know all too well: the camera, gentle and sensitive, scrutinises the movements of our canine companions, down to the most minute quiver as they turn to us. And while their mouths cannot enunciate, their melancholic expressions give substance to the voices that echo in the night.
