Spring 23
Zhiyi Wang
A young man who has just finished handling the funeral of his parents attempts to purchase some fireworks for the 2023 Spring Festival, where fireworks are prohibited.
Director and cinematographer Zhiyi WANG trained as a filmmaker at the London Film School. After his first short film Some Manifestations of the South (2021), he directed Spring 23, which won the Grand Prize at the Oberhausen Film Festival.
A word from the selection committee:
Upon adopting the perspective of his protagonist - Maosen - Whang Zhiyi opts for a clear narrative line, and gifts us with true gems of intelligence under this apparently trivial story.
In a very specific context - the first public celebration after the Covid restrictions - the film tells the story of a bereavement hindered by an absurd, murky bureaucracy.
Bathed in warm orange hues and the grain of the film, we are swept away by this tribute to resilience and its cold burlesque undertones.
