Trans Memoria
Victoria Verseau
Upon fulfilling her dream of becoming a woman, Victoria must grieve her friend Meril’s death. Along with Athena and Aamina - who are themselves transitioning - Victoria returns to Thailand to find the ghosts of her past and, hopefully, a better future.
Victoria Verseau studied at the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm. Based on her personal experiences of being trans, her works explore themes such as body, memory and identity. She has a broad practice that includes sculpture, large-scale installations, performance, video works, fiction and documentary. Trans Memoria is her first documentary feature and premiered at Karlovy Vary.
A word from the selection committee:
Making a film as an altar to a loved one who has passed away, could there be a more beautiful proof of love? Upon returning to the places where she met Meril, Victoria Verseau seems at first to be searching for a ghost. Yet, this Thaï hotel, seemingly emptied of all life, reveals itself to be a labyrinth of contradictory and deeply moving emotions. With a keen sense of composition, the film takes us through these spaces and confronts viewers with resurfacing memories: memories of pain, loss, and effort, but also joy and care.
At times a video diary, an investigation, and a Socratic dialogue, this first hybrid and deeply compassionate feature film makes us feel the force and complexities of life experiences and the dreams that come with them.
